Description
Come see two films: Arc of Justice and Streets of Dreams and engage in a talk-back with filmmakers and others about the themes introduced in the film and how they can be used as a resource in your work. Arc of Justice traces the inspiring journey of New Communities Inc. and the struggle for racial and economic justice among African Americans in southwest Georgia. Formed in 1969 during the Civil Rights movement, New Communities persevered as the largest black-owned farm in the country despite relentless opposition. It lost its land in 1985 due to discriminatory lending practices by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, but then prevailed in an historic lawsuit and staked its claim to new land and a new beginning in 2009. Streets of Dreams presents inspiring portraits of grassroots activists in communities of color who are using a community land trust to preserve affordable housing and promote development without displacing longtime residents. Showcasing CLTs in New Orleans, Atlanta, Delray Beach and Durham, the film challenges audiences to rethink how equitable community development can be accomplished.
